A bit of a different entry, but I got myself a new bookcase/doll shelf combo! I now have almost everyone inside glass doors, so I thought I’d take a few photos of them. I used to have two showcases for dolls and a regular, dull bookshelf, but it was one huge waste of space. All the shelves were evenly placed and many of my books were too small fill it properly, so there was a lot of wasted empty space. I browsed through every furniture store site I could find and visited every local store, looking for a new shelf with glass doors but nothing was right. All the shelves were the wrong size, colour or price. So, I gave up, designed one myself and had dad help me build it. We worked on it together for a few months and it’s now finally done. I have the perfect book/doll shelf combo. <3
I could fit everyone except for Llyr in the three shelves I have. His feet are so huge that he takes up the space of two larger dolls or like 4 small ones (when he sits), so now he stands on my desk gathering dust. (Previously he sat in the old bookshelf.)
This is the new beauty:
I had to size the shelf based on those glass doors because they were pretty much the only ones available separately. However, I wanted the shelf to be bigger than what they would’ve made it, so I came up with the interesting asymmetric design. Of course I could’ve had someone make me glass doors exactly the right size, but those would’ve cost a fortune.
The shelf has a ton of different options for my dolls. A few of the shelves can be removed or changed, so that I can have the minis and smaller dolls stand or sit in many different places. <3
More photos with the dolls:
New shelf.
Older small one. The sofa gang from the new shelf used to be on the lower shelf here, but since it’s tall enough for the shorter SDs I moved them there. They take up less space when they stand than when they sit.
Most of the big ones got removed from here. There’s still space for Lin too, when he gets back home from visiting Mizya. :P (But dayum those overly long Zenith legs take up space.)
Poor Llyr is an outcast. xD
And close-ups:
A very random group. :’D
Well, this is kinda random, too. Mixing fantasy and human dolls.
Yay, a new place for these guys. I designed this space specifically for the couch, so that there’s enough space in the end for one or two minis to stand as well. Although now Min Ki is sitting on the stool I finally managed to paint.
This is what I tested first:
I also tried this:
Prisca gets to hang out with Sooty now, and my Elf figure.
There’s also an option for this:
We made an extra half-shelf from the leftover materials (that can also be mirrored to the other side) and this way I can also fit that msd sized chair in the shelf and someone can sit on it. It was in the top part of the smaller shelf before and nobody could sit on it because the shelf wasn’t high enough, haha.
I’m so excited about this. There’s so much more space for me too, because I no longer have to have 3-4 dolls standing on my floor where I have to constantly move them out of the way.
That is brilliant, I can’t believe you guys built it all by yourself!!! I love how versatile and flexible it is~ I wish I could have one just like it, it seems like a dream space for people with lots of hobbies like us XD!
Haha, this wasn’t the first time I had to turn to a design of my own: two years ago we built this for my desk, because it was a mess with all the stuff I needed to have readily available. As always, I didn’t have any luck finding anything useable readily from stores. :P
But yes, I really love it too~ And it’s certainly very ‘me’. It’s certainly very different from anything they sell here: Finns looove ugly white simplistic furniture and you can get that stuff anywhere, but if you’re looking for anything darker (I don’t do white -at all) the options become very limited.
Wow, you two are geniuses combined! You can consider building some Dolly furniture too with your combined skills? :3 that would be so awesome. Though I saw you already have some really awesome sofas for your dollies!
Haha, actually I love white furniture ;) But I prefer vintage style designs over modern designs! Those are fairly hard to find as well I think. I dream to one day build a big house for my Pullips @o@ I already have tons and tons of furniture ready for it xD!!;
Ahah, we have made a few simple benches and the striped msd sofa is also made by my dad+me combo because all the places just sell SD furniture. I should be making an armchair to match it too, but I don’t think I have enough fabric for it. :/ I’m also wanting a table + chairs but I might just buy those when I have the money.
There’s no problem getting vintage style white furniture here either. They also sell a lot of stuff with readily chipped paint so that it looks old. Ugh. Walking to a very typical Finnish home is like going to a hospital: white floors, white walls, white ceilings, white furniture. And then there are spots of bright colour that come from the textiles. It’s all so clinical -I guess so that it’s brighter during winter when the days are short, but it just seems cold to me and not homey at all. I lived in Thailand for a couple of years and got my furniture tastes from there: they use teak, rosewood etc. dark furniture.
Wow, that’s amazing! I always love seeing how other people display their dolls but I think your new one way is one of my favourites so far xD
Thank you, I love seeing people’s doll displays too, which is why I thought to post this. x3 I was very much inspired by this insanely expensive shelf, without which I might not have been able to design this one at all. But I’m so glad I was able to make it happen. It’s perfect -even if it does look handmade at places.
This is a very beautiful display! everyone looks so natural standing and sitting around and the shelves really make good use of space :D
